First case of cholera in the Philippines was reported
The first case of cholera was reported along the Pasig River, within a few days bodies were piling up in the streets. It is believed the cholera arrived in the Philippines via the port of Manila and originated from one of the many countries in Asia that were also affected by the Asiatic Cholera Pandemic.
The worst affected areas were along the Pasig River which was a source of drinking water for many communities. The epidemic spread so fast that it is claimed in a matter of hours thousands had died, and there was not enough survivors to bury them.
Rumours went about that it was caused foreigners poisoning the drinking water and the locals went on a rampage of violence butchering all the foreigners they could find.
