9th February 1905
A modern sewerage system was proposed for Manila
Open Canals in public market was the only type of sanitation in Manila before 1905
It was also a common practice in poor areas to wrap faeces in newspaper and just throw it in the street.
The only thing that slightly resembled a sewage system was about 1,500 buckets of waste water were taken by boat and dumped into Manila bay.
The colonial government on the 9th February 1905 decided to do something about this and proposed a modern sewerage system to tackle the problem of poor sanitation in Manila.
